⚖️ Could N.Y. lawmakers pass legislation this year to decriminalize sex work?
🖋️ Two bills sponsored by Democrats would decriminalize the trade in different ways.
Before you say, “That’s never going to happen,” bear in mind that Democrats have more than once approved legislation that wasn’t expected to pass before the end of session.
Remember the Clean Slate bill, which Democrats passed last year in the final days of session as its chances had started to dim?
Or in 2021, when lawmakers passed a bill to allow gun manufacturers to be sued for creating a “public nuisance”? Some lawmakers were hazy on their support before the bill hit the floor.
So if Democrats who control the Legislature decide to pass a bill that would bar criminal charges to people who perform sex work, it wouldn’t be a total surprise.
