Gov. Kathy Hochul gave a preview of a proposal that she says would address crime in New York City and be negotiated in the state budget.
New York’s first female lieutenant governor, Mary Anne Krupsak, has died.

🏥 Hochul to pitch expansion of involuntary commitment, Kendra’s Law in state budget
It’s no secret that violent crime has gone up in New York City’s subways, where a woman died last month after being set on fire. That was not the first violent crime in the city that made headlines in 2024.
Hochul said Friday she will propose changes this month to state law that would allow more people to be involuntarily committed to a hospital if they appear to be at risk of harming themselves or others due to a mental illness.
“The law is not firm enough,” Hochul told reporters Friday.
