Good afternoon — it’s Tuesday and Election Day.
In today’s CapCon:
Election Day is finally here. We’ve got a quick rundown of how tonight is expected to go. Don’t forget about Election Night Bingo!
The State Police trooper who was shot on Long Island last week is now being investigated and has been suspended without pay.
New York is planning to move away from Regents exam requirements.
Migrants who work for companies contracted with state agencies may have faked their qualifications and immigration status.
Two hearings have been scheduled by the Legislature in November.
❗CapCon Note: It is the last day to claim a free 30-day trial of CapCon. I’ll have a full rundown of results tomorrow. You don’t want to miss that! Click here for that free trial.
☑️ It’s Election Day. Here’s what to expect.
The fun, if that’s what you’d like to call it, won’t start until after polls close at 9 p.m. tonight. Results will start to trickle in from county boards of elections in the first half hour after that.
Some counties are slower than others. The two counties on Long Island — Nassau and Suffolk — are usually two of the stragglers and, unfortunately for us, that’s home to three of the state’s most competitive congressional districts.
The headliner of the night is the race for president. But the encore act is right here in New York, where a handful of districts could decide which major party controls Congress next year.
There’s nothing left to say about those races until after polls close. We’ll probably have a sense of winners within the first two hours after polls close but it’s not uncommon for some races to remain uncalled for days.
I’ll be tracking races in the Legislature and our team at the Times Union will be looking at Congress. You can follow along on our website or with the TU app.
(I’m not working until later but didn’t want to leave you without a CapCon for today.)
But as we sort through results, you can play Election Night Bingo!
